The term 'Malgudi' is symbolic of those glorious childhood days, which I am sure, every 90s kid can relate to. The tale of Swami and his friends was what we held close to our heart and laughed and cried with them. Ah ! Those days !!
Malgudi Days was written by the eminent storyteller, R.K. Narayan and the story revolved in the South Indian fictional town of Malgudi. The essence of the tales is such that it is still immersed deep in the lives of every South Indian. And there are many joints in and around Bangalore influenced by the same. One such place is the Malgudi Vattika which is an epitome of those times. And the Food Blogger's Association of Bangalore brought me and my fellow foodie friends the oppurtunity to visit this beautiful place. It was the 22nd FBAB meet and we were enticed by the grace yet the simplicity of the place.
The place is located on the Bangalore-Mysore Highway and is visible when we are en-route Mysore. And yes, it does come precisely a kilometre after Wonder-la.
Infused with a lot of greenery, this place is a perfect getaway from the hustle-bustle of the city life. The private dining area is known as the "Halli Katte" here with few tables for small family gatherings or celebrations !
The ethnic touch can be seen with every object inside the place. Be it the games for relaxation purpose or the furniture; the touch of art can be seen in everything. The games played in that era has been recreated here and yes,a great deal of research has been done on the same. The Gramophone, the wooden trunk, the vintage telephone, the wooden almirah, the Veena and the menu in the form of a hand-fan looked really exquisite.
After being seated at our places in the lush green garden, we were served ButterMilk which was a sheer disappointment though. It lacked salt and other flavors.
The first dish that came up to us was Holige or Obbattu i.e.Indian Bread infused with grated coconut and jaggery with ghee dripping from everywhere served with Mirchi Bhajji which was exactly the one we have at home. And yes, the obbattu tasted really great.
Then came the Paneer Tikka which had the "tikka" feeling in it and it tasted really great along with the green chutney served to us.
Malgudi Vatika is a vegetarian restaurant but it manages to offer you a wide range of cuisines to choose from with North-Indian dishes and South-Indian dishes ruling their menu. But, Malgudi being a South-Indian affair, we settled with their South Indian dishes and yes, it was a pleasant experience altogether.

We were welcomed with a welcome drink of Lime Soda to quench our thirst and indeed, it was exactly what we were vouching for because of the soaring high temperatures.

The Thalis served to us were top-notch. The meal comprising of the Jowar Roti was quite filling with the brilliant side-dishes. The roti had the perfect amount of ghee and it was really soft, just the way I like my rotis to be. Next came the thali with the Puri and I totally relished the puris. It was quite different from the conventional puris we make at home.
The rice items came next with the Thali comprising of White Rice and then the Vegetable Pulao and Vegetable Biryani. Quite delectant, I must say !
The north-Indian meal with Makke ki roti and Sarson ka saagh could have been better. It didn't taste the way I had expected it to be. The color looked really good but yes, at times, the looks can be deceiving.
The service was quite a let-down. I remember having asked for a Pineapple juice and it never came up to me as I was stated this lame reason that they fell short of Pineapples. I did not expect this response, to be frank. Furthermore, they messed up the juices order too with people not getting what they had asked for. So, yes, we had to compromise.
On our advent to this place, we spent some time speaking to the owner of the place, Rishabh Mehta. He was quite warm driving us through the history of the place and what influenced him to come up with this concept of old Karnataka life away from the chaos of the city. It was quite nice listening to him. We were all gifted a pot of chocolates and I totally loved them.
I would definitely stop by this place while on the highway for an ideal experience with the laid-back set-up and yes, a walk through those old simpleton times to be transformed into a completely different era back in time.
